Mamma Mia!
Saw Mamma Mia! over the weekend...well, it was hilarious and very retro, with an absolutely kitschy but enjoyable finale that will make you stand up and dance! One complaint is that "Owstraylian" accent was a little hard to get used to, but you'll be fine after a few minutes.
But what was truly amazing about Mamma Mia! was that it showed what a great range of emotions you can get from ABBA's music. Ranging from sad to mad, sympathetic to psychedelic, ABBA's music brought back so much meaning to me at this stage of my life.
Ok it's time to step out of the closet. Yes, I am an ABBA fan. Since I was young *blush*. I never enjoyed children's songs or nursery rhymes. I grew up on ABBA. I could say "Chiquitita" and "Voulez-vous" when I was four, much to the amusement of my babysitters, a Malay family who lived next door. I could mimic the sound of the lyrics and spout them on demand even though I didn't know what they meant at that time. According to my mum, I was always going "Gimme gimme gimme" and "Money money money". Hmm not much has changed since, I still say that a lot today but with less success.
I used to pester my mum to buy me ABBA's cassettes (oh man!! those things make me feel so old!), which she kindly obliged. I guess parents aren't very discriminating last time, or she wasn't aware that her innocent and ignorant daughter was going aroung singing "gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight"!
Anyway, Mamma Mia! is worth a watch for retrochicks. Although not all the singers are good, the actress for Donna, the mother-of-the-bride, is an absolutely divine singer.
