His Dark Materials Trilogy - The Golden Compass (also known as Northern Lights), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass
I didn't mean to finish this trilogy so quickly, but I can do nothing except to read it. Suddenly my journey to work seem to pass so quickly... I won't describe HDM as a series for children, as there are some life's lessons that a child may not get. Sure it may seem simply like a whimsical adventure for those who want to read it like one. But it is much more than that...it's a criticism of religion, a love story, a coming of age tale and a whole lot of fantastic elements and characters that are prfoundly memorable. Imagine an armoured polar bear named Iorek Byrnison fighting for his friend. Imagine "ragged yet elegant" ladies in black, the witches who fly on pine sprays. Imagine children with their personal daemon that can take the shape of animals. One of the best modern fantasy trilogies ever, but may not be suitable for children due to its intricate and unconventional themes. Highly recommended!
