Done with Midnight Express...most of the action is squeezed into the last chapter. The events in the 1978 movie were very different from those in the book, thanks to Oliver Stone who wrote the screenplay and over-dramatised the story with rape, violence and romance. The language used is very simple, clearly it relied more on its story rather than its literary value. The book seems pretty honest, with lots of things that went wrong, unsuccessful attempts to escape, failed relationships without overdoing the emotions and tragedy. No, he wasn't gang raped in prison, but instead "made love" with a fellow inmate. No, he wasn't beatened and tortured for no good reason. No, there was no "happy ever after" fairy tale ending. A good read for people fascinated with prison systems and lifestyle. Other recommended prison books: Stephen King's Shawshank Redemption, Henri Charriere's Papillon, Alexandre Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo and Manuel Puig's Kiss of a Spiderwoman.
