Golden Chicken

It's a week for Chinese movies! Caught Sandra Ng (Wu Jun Ru) in Golden Chicken today...it's kind of a bittersweet comedy with some pretty good acting from Sandra Ng and Tony Leung Kar Fai (my god! I completely didn't recognise him until the credits roll!), but the dialogue, being authenthically voiced by true-blue Cantonese speakers in MANDARIN, adds more to the hilarity of the show. I won't say the show glorifies prostitution, but it is very optimistic and finds humour in many sad facets of life. It is best described by a quote that a friend sent me today:

"I live by this credo: Have a little laugh at life and look around you for happiness instead of sadness. Laughter has always brought me out of unhappy situations. Even in your darkest moment, you usually can find something to laugh about if you try hard enough."

(Thanks to fishmonk for the inspiring quote!)

Golden Chicken gives a historical account of Hong Kong and the changes it underwent through the years, from the angle of a chicken (ji=prostitute). I would much prefer the dialogue to be left in Cantonese, as some of the jokes are less funny when translated into Mandarin...sigh...shouldn't they at least give us an option for the preferred language?? Never mind, I'll just get a Canto-version VCD when it comes out then. Sandra Ng may get herself nominated for some acting awards for this movie...she is brilliant as a madcap character full of comical actions and antics, if she is over-acting, I would have thought that it was part of her real character :)...It's not a show that will make you burst out laughing, but the guy behind me is either a Sandra Ng fan or had a stressful day cos he laughed boisterously at everything she said or did and even kicked my chair in violent appreciation....grr....
