Singapore Esplanade Opens with Much Fanfare, But An Artistic Society it Does Not Make
Have been very amused by the articles on hypocrisy and being sophisticated enough to attend events at Esplanade. Although the same rules apply for Victoria Concert Hall and most other "arty" events, I don't see why the Esplanade has to be seen as a snootier place. I particularly like the article on Business Times by Jaime Ee. If I may quite one of her paragraphs here: "Interestingly, a debate of sorts arose recently over issues of theatre etiquette and how the dos-and-don'ts spelt out by the Esplanade were seen as uppity rules made up by the nose-in-the-air elite to alienate casual dressing heartlanders who consider handphone-ringing, nose-blowing and mid-performance running commentaries as indigenous behaviour that is perfectly acceptable in any social situation. Rude remarks about human hair as art could well be included as natural behaviour, come to think of it."
Is it because the Esplanade costs so much that people are pinning such hopes on it? Should it try and encompass all kinds of audiences? In the first place, for people not interested in artistic performances, they will not attend them anyway. Or is it more like an effort to give people from all walks of life a reason to go to the Esplanade? Pardon my Zoological references but - "You can lead a blue gourami to water but you can't make it swim".

A consumer with independence in her area is too ethnic to make on a debate center or land stamp home.
