Why I Love Ramly So
Pasar malams (night markets) always attract me, partly because of the cheap stuff they sell, the you-know-whats and of course, the food. And the food I always hunt down is...the Ramly Burger. Somehow I have to buy one every time I see a Ramly Burger stand, just like when I made a beeline for the Ramly Burger stall at the Boon Lay Pasar Malam this evening.
Who is Ramly?
I have no idea why this burger is named Ramly, presumably, the guy who invented it is Ramly?? This burger is made exclusively by the Malays, and requires quite a bit of effort on the chef's part. First you have to cook the patty (either chicken or beef), then you have to fry an egg and wrap it around the patty. Drench the patty generously with plenty of flavours, and these vary from mustard to BBQ sauce, curry powder (yummy!) to black pepper sauce, and ketchup or chilli sauce. As you can imagine, it's a pretty messy burger to eat!
So why do I love Ramly so?
The first Ramly Burger I ever had was during one of my life's biggest adventures...which is, sad to say, a Zoology field trip in Tioman. It was also one of the hardest time of my life, where we had to stay in a rickety shack for a week with no decent water to wash in and being alternatively covered in mud and floundering in the river for all of seven days. On one of the days when we were terribly cold, drenched, exhausted, miserable and hungry, a hawker pushing a cart and selling this hot and freshly-cooked Ramly Burger was a welcome sight. That was definitely one of the best meals I ever had. Somehow, I remember how delicously hot the egg was, how the chilli sauce warmed me up instantly, and how soft and juicy the patty was...And to this day, I am instantly drawn to any Ramly Burger stand, hoping to relive that feeling of total appreciation and gratitude for a hot burger to warm up a cold and miserable soul.
So when you next walk into a Pasar Malam or visit Malaysia, do keep your eyes open for Ramly Burger!
