Within Temptation
While trying to fill the gap for Nightwish, I found that I actually like Within Temptation, a Dutch Gothic band better. And it's because of the lead singer, Sharon den Adel. Not only does she have a voice that can sound tender and sweet (unlike Tarja's which is so powerful it scares me sometimes and makes me want to run - which is good for the gym!), but on top of that, Sharon writes beautiful lyrics. I find that it's something special when the singer writes the lyrics - you really feel the the singer expressing what he/she writes. Just like Faye when she sings the lyrics that she writes, e.g. 阳宝 "需要阳光的宝贝啊 别气我不懂别向我示威 无论我多想是个太阳 却只是另一株向日葵"
Just take a look at these lines from one of my favourite Within Temptation songs "The Truth Beneath the Rose", penned by Sharon:
Pray for me cause I have lost my faith in holy wars
Is paradise denied to me cause I can’t take no more
Has darkness taken over me, consumed my mortal soul
All my virtues sacrificed, can Heaven be so cruel?
I’m hoping, I’m praying
I won’t get lost between two worlds
For all I have seen the truth lies in between
Give me the strength to face the wrong that I have done
Now that I know the darkest side of me
How can blood be our salvation
And justify the pain that we have caused throughout the times
Will I learn what’s truly sacred?
Will I redeem my soul, will truth set me free?
Somehow this song is so right to listen to when wandering inside Gothic churches in France. I wish I had attended their recent concert in Japan - I have heard some of their "live" performances and they are really good!
And their music has a nice RPG feel too! See, the above is a good example of the repentance of a Lawful Evil alignment.
Another good set of lyrics from Sharon, again I see it as a repentance of a Lawful Evil character:

He surely would flee but the oath made him stay
He’s torn between his honor and the true love of his life

So many dreams were broken and so much was sacrificed

And since I am in such a musical mood, here's another exciting piece of news! Madonna's best movie, Desperately Seeking Susan, is going to be made into a musical! AND the best part is, the music will be all from BLONDIE!! Woohoo!! I can't wait to see it! If it ain't coming here I'll have to get my butt to London somehow! See 'ere for the good news!
