The Lady, or the Tiger?
Thanks to Blondie's very sexual yet maternal Background Melody (The Only One), I found the story that the lyrics pointed to - Frank Stockton's The Lady, or the Tiger? It's a great short story that lets you learn more about yourself - but you might not like to know what you are really like. Sure we are all not infallible - we are all sinners, only delusional people think they are perfect or demand perfection. We use the term "perfectionist" lazily and irresponsibly to mean we want the best possible, we cannot tolerate mistakes, we take things seriously. I am guilty as charged - I think I'm a perfectionist when it comes to writing, to my work, to myself but... what happens when you demand perfection of something imperfect to start with? Ends up that one isn't being true to oneself. So, instead of saying "I'm a perfectionist", why not say "I have high demands for myself but I know I'm not perfect, and I do accept that mistakes are human nature." Happier people all round.
Sorry I digress - what to do if you're the webmistress of Distraction? Anyway I was talking about being distracted (!) by The Lady, or the Tiger. Yeah go read it, I actually bothered to link it twice! In fact, I'm gonna go hunt down this book at Kino/Borders/Amazon.
And another distraction - give The Curse of Blondie a listen. Yeah, I know they're old, I know I keep going on and on about them, it's only been months since I've been a convert but I can't stop wanting to listen to them. Recommended tracks on this 2004 album: Background Melody (The Only One), End to End, Good Boys, Rules for Living and Magic (Asadoya Yunta) [a really wierd Buddhist-sounding tune!].
