DDay - T minus 10

Pinned down with heavy resistance and relentless fire, I can hardly take a step forward without constantly seeking cover. All kinds of destruction imaginable is hurled in my direction - grenades, smoke screens, tear gas, even a heat-seeking Ultimate Deadline Missile which is practically unavoidable and will probably pin me down for a while once it has found its mark.

I sought shelter in the trenches, what I call my home, and read a note from my mother. She has never seen the movie Braveheart, and probably never heard of his story, but she's a real advocate for freedom. "Never sell you freedom for anything - money, prospects, ideals, a promised land. It is so easy to trade it for something material when you still have it - it is only when you lose it that you realise that it is everything that you ever want."

I'm lightly armed, my flak vest already riddled with holes from previous battles, I've lost my helmet, and I have no idea where to get extra supplies. My radio's dead, I can't call for help, my binoculars are smashed, I can't call for an airstrike. I could seek some relief at my buddies' but in the end, this is a battle that I must fight myself.

There's another thing my mother taught me - never be a coward. As long as I'm not dead, there's no reason to give up.
